Animal Production Program

  01B05 BALB/cAnN
(C, Balb C, C/Andervont)

Origin: To N 1951 from Andervont at F72. To MacDowell in 1923 who started inbreeding for Bagg. To Snell in 1932 at F26 who added the c, to Andervont in 1935.
Genetics:

A, b, c
Albino
Genes:

Car-2b, Ce-2a, Cs-1a, Es-1b, Es-3a, Es-10a, Gpd-1b, Gpi-1a, Gusa, Hbab, Hbbd, Idh-1a, Lva, Mod-1a, Mup-1a, Pep-3a, Pgm-1a, Trfb
Hc1, H-2Dd, H-2Kd, Lyb-2b, Lyt-1b, Lyt-2b, Lyt-3b, Thy-1b, Tlac.

Disease
Model:
IgA immune complex nephropathies, such as berger’s disease and Henoch-Schoenlein Purpura. (584)

Diseases
    Neoplastic (Spontaneous):

  • Mammary tumor incidence low, but increased when mammary tumor virus introduced. (274)
  • Incidence of tumors in BALB/cAnDe female breeders at 17-19 months: 22% mammary gland (adenocanthoma most frequent), 10% reticulum cell sarcoma (mostly type B), and 26% pulmonary tumors. (126)
  • The total incidence of neoplasms (94%) reported in aging virgin BALB/cAnNBdf mice was considerably higher than that from other BALB/c studies, largely due to the high incidence of adrenal cortical tumors (29%), lung tumors (32%), and reticulum cell sarcoma (61%). Vascular tumors (5%) and myoepitheliomas (3%) are rare in other strains of mice, but have also been reported for other BALB/c mice. (108)
  • The high incidence (60-70% in both sexes) of kidney neoplasms reported in BALB/cfCd has not been noted in other BALB/c substrains. (108)
  • Moderate incidence of leukemia, late in life, due to endogenous Type C virus. (089)

    Neoplastic (Induced):

  • Interstitial cell testicular tumors and vaginal carcinomas induced by diethylstilbestrol implants; gross lesion of the testis, but not pituitary induced by dietary diethylstilbestrol (C57BL/6N). (232,013)
  • Susceptible to induction of plasmacytomas by mineral oil or pristine. (551)
  • 3-Methylcholanthrene increased the incidence of pulmonary adenomas to 50–62% in males and females and lymphomas to 20–31%. (004)
  • Urinary bladder carcinomas of the transitional cell type were induced in females, but not males, treated with 2-napthylamine and cyclophosphamide. (823)
  • Subcutaneous connective tissue from BALB/c produced tumors after growth in petri dishes; latent period before tumor appearance was inversely proportional to time in tissue culture. (068)
  • In comparison with other inbred strains, BALB/c is susceptible to Gross, Tennant, Vaccinia, and Friend B viruses, and relatively resistant to Friend S virus. (370)

    Non-Neoplastic (Spontaneous):

  • Aging virgin BALB.cAnNBdf mice had a high incidence (27-74%) of uterine and mammary hyperplasia, hyperplastic nodules of the adrenal cortex, glomerulosclerosis, and auricular thrombosis; and a moderate incidence (8-21%) of ovarian cysts, arteriosclerosis, ovarian endometriosis, and calcification of organs, principally the heart. (108)
  • Dystrophic cardiac calcinosis in BALB/cAnNlcr mice was almost exclusively epicardial, with equal frequency and severity in mated males and females; virgin females had the highest incidence of 5 strains tested. Renal calcinosis was rare. (160)

    Non-Neoplastic (Induced):

  • Glomerulonephritic changes were induced by immune complexes formed either in vitro or in vivo with polymeric (but not monomeric) IgA from MOPC-315 myeloma. C3 was not essential for the induction of renal injury although the immune complexes fix C3. (584)
  • Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia was produced by the administration of corticosteroids, a low protein diet, and tetracycline in the drinking water. (772)
  • Infection with Leishmania tropica yields a suitable model for experimental leishmaniasis. (063)
  • Susceptible to toxoplasmosis. (246)
  • Uterine cervical and vaginal lesions increased after treatment with norethynodrel plus mestranol (progestin plus estrogen). (275)

Other Characteristics
    Immunologic:

  • Expression of XenCSA is low on thymic and splenic lymphocytes. (488)
  • Lacks the autosomal dominat gene which confers hybrid resistance to BALB/c plasmacytoma MPC-11, and is susceptible to tumor take. (768)
  • Allergenicity of concanavalin A is low is this strain. (468)
  • Treatment of BALB/c with anti-idiotype Ab against T15 idiotype produced immunologic tolerance to PC antigen, with no compensatory increase in anti-PC antibody bearing other idiotypes. (107,711)
  • Phenotypic expression of AKR MuLv gp 71 is late. (395)
  • BALB/c and C3H viral loci are allelic and linked to PGM 1 on chromosome 5. (316,317)
  • Immune response (PFC) to dinitrophenyl bovine serum albumin is high. (321)
  • Susceptible to mouse hepatitis virus 3 infection; disease is acute or chronic depending on dose. (405)
  • Low serum interferon levels after induction by Newcastle disease virus or mouse mammary tumor virus. (131)
  • BALB/cAnN, like BALB/cBy has Qa-2- and Qa-3- specificities. (190)
